Just been on SDAA forum and they,ve challanged us to a intersite match. As yet dates are still to be arranged, possable venue is the match lenght on the drains in Southport. Who intrested, sounds like it could be fun! For more info and to give them some banter see, www.southportangling.co.uk.

I would definitely be interested. You do realise there is a chance of a battering if we take them on on their own water. Perhaps they would be good enough to give us a day or two's practice? Nevertheless is sounds like fun.

i'd be interested, but like matt said, we would need a water thats netural for the both of us. We have an 80-peg match length on the River Crossens which is about a mile long. An open match is being fished on it in just over a week with £2400 of prize money so it is ready and waiting to be fished. At present, less than a dozen members fish the weekly club matches (including just one forum member) Why go looking for a neutral water when that's what we've already got? Apart from the aforementioned individual, none of us are match anglers - so if all you're interested in is winning, fair play - you probably will. Unless you spend £36 to join SDAA you have no other way of fishing the club match length because it's a members only water, so I can't see the issue myself. We had hoped it would foster closer relations between the forums, but if battle lines are being drawn already it kind of defeats the point which, personally speaking, I find a bit disappointing.

I don't remember asking to change the venue. I only said there was a chance of a battering - even if we get one it will still be a laugh! I think it's very kind of SDAA to offer actually and would like to take the opportunity to thank them for it. I also think you are right marky, lets keep it nice and friendly. I was only being a bit cheeky & testing the water to see if a few of us could have a day on the drain beforehand, I've been meaning to have a go on there all season. If not it doesn't matter - are there any pleasure pegs?

Sorry mate, Jamie posted after you and commented about a neutral venue.
The day ticket length is available if you'd like to try it, and is essentially on the same drain.
We're still trying to sort out the approach to the club with regards to a proper booking of the match length. We (as in the forum bods) seem to agree that the top end of the match length away from where some members occasionally fish) would be a good section to fish as a match as none of us have been up there since the pegs were restored for the upcoming Centenary match.
As plans progress we will keep you informed. In the meantime, as Matt says lets focus on keeping it a friendly meet-up and lets hear what the regulars on here think of the idea. Having read many reports from commercial venues over the summer months, it would be nice to see how some of you take to drain fishing (and whether we could learn from you if you're good at it!!)

No worries marky - I'm looking forward to it, hopefully we'll get plenty of interest. We have a few decent canal anglers on here and by all accounts the drain is similar? I've been concentrating more on the commercials myself this summer to find decent turnouts but I'll switch back to the cut come mid-September. Keep us informed mate - thanks again!

Not really,if the sluice's pumping,it's a total different ball game. How many of you got 2 to 4g river pole floats? When I first joined SDAA over 10 years ago,it took me over 12 monthes to understand how to tackle the drains in different conditions.Sometimes,I had to change my set up a few time in one session just to cope with the flow to carry on catching.

You're welcome Matt - rest assured one of us will keep this forum informed of developments. You're right - the drains are like 'beefed-up' canals, the main differences being the pumping activities and the complete lack of boats which aren't allowed on the River Crossens.

I think this is a great idea and just shows how pro-active the members of the two forums are if we can pull it off.
Lets not take it to serious,Im happy with the choice of venue and look forward to meeting and learning a few things about fishing them.
Thanks marky for posting and keep us informed.

Talk about tips,at one point,I even converted one of the rod into swing tip just to cope with the surface weeds. If anyone not fish those drains before, you better have a few pratice session on the daytickets stretch Baits wise, maggots, pinkies, caster, bread, worms, corns, hemps will be your main baits(KeviN,you can stick with pellets, meat and bollies .If you got Pole, tip and trotting rods should cover any condition.Oh,nearly forget,a bait dropper will be handy if you have one Good luck to you all

Kev,I had caught bream, tench and skimmers in the past with expanded pellets(works better at 3 pools) in summer but not as good bait as corns as far as big bait goes I now and again use ground bait for tench and bream in summers, but mostly fish casters, bread punch, pinkies and maggots over hemps,or just drift feeding loose feed BTW,those tench in the drains are nothing like those tench in the commercial mud holes, they are like turbo charge, you'll know once you hook one

BTW,those tench in the drains are nothing like those tench in the commercial mud holes, they are like turbo charge, you'll know once you hook one Hooking them is one thing - landing them can sometimes be quite a different concept altogether. They go like buggery (even the smaller ones) and unless they're under good tight control can spook a swim for quite a while once hooked. Many, many anglers have been smashed by Tench on the Sluice.

Home and away? How many in a team? Im up for it............. Err, we haven't got a team - nor are we likely to have. Just tell us how many are coming so we know how many to book (& peg) for. I don't think the intention was to have teams or even to make it a competitive thing - more a social gathering. If individuals want to go all out for the kudos, fair play.

The weather will have turned by then so I reckon we will have missed the best tench sport. No matter though I think the drain makes an interesting prospect.

as it's not really FM Vs SDAA, just a gathering I think I'd join... I was just afraid I will blank there and ruin FM's good reputation, you know... oh it's time to dig out all my fishing mag about river fishing!
