after reading of people fishing the cut and with a possible mach on it i decided to give the old roan a bash this afternoon seeing as i havent fished on a canal in about 14 years
went for punch bread at the bottom of the far shelf from the off whilst feeding a swim right up against the reeds with caster and hemp to switch to when bites tailed off
a full pot of liquidised bread went in 9 meters out at about 2 o,clock, second cast i was into a nice roach of about 1/2 a pound so things were looking good
2 more of similiar stamp followed in the next 2 casts then i hooked a tench that had my elastic shooting out at a rapid rate to my left, i quickly had to add sections to follow it down and gradually got it under a bit of control (i was using 0.08 bottom and a number 4 elastic...the lightest ive got), it was at this point that i decided to be a bit of a smart arse and feed my far bank swim again...yup you guessed it i lost it , i knew it had been a tench as the bottom of the rig was covered in its tell tail snot
next cast and again i was into roach, after roach every cast, i was quite happily catching these all day but it was becoming harder and harder to keep the bread on the hook as it was drying out even though i kept it covered, so out i went to 11m into the reeds that i had been feeding all along.
the float sunk straight away this time with a nice perch
it was a bite a chuck mainly from perch but with the odd roach thrown in, they were of less a size than i was catching on the bread so i decided to go back onto the 9 meter line but fish caster , another 2 full pots of liquidised bread went in and i put in a bit of caster over the top.
was catching the better sized roach out here and also a bonus bream
packed in at 2.15 to get home for the kids getting out of school, really enjoyed the day makes a change from bloody carp, and all the fish were in very good condition, not one had a scab or loose scale on it i will be going again probably one day next week if the weathers nice get a bit more practice in
