i'm gona start piking soon, sunday hopefully, but i'm a bit undcided weather to go or not, i have all the right equiptment to unhook a pike, but i'm not sure if i'd have the confidence, but how else am i going to get the confidence unless i actually try it? if anyone could come and give me a few pointers that would be the greatest help,

Jamie, Here is a lesson on how NOT to hold a pike (I used to think that moustache looked good ;D ) Use semi barbless hooks, make sure you have long forceps and lay it on it's back on an unhooking mat between your legs to stop it wriggling. (No smart a*se comments about the last bit). If you are dead-baiting it's also better to strike straight away when you get the bite, rather a lost fish than a deep hooked one, I would also float a bait at first rather than ledger because you will see the bite faster, I have known pike take a ledgered bait and swallow it without moving off. Good Luck Woody

Jamie, Let us know how you got on. If you can get hold of Smelt I found that better than Mackerel. Good luck

Jamie, When I said strike straight away I meant that you should let the float either go under or start running, you are not striking as soon as you get movement on it are you?

No, the first time i hit it the rod tip was bent around. and the float was swimming off the second time, the other two, the pike took it on the move. so i cuddnt of done anything about them

You should have them set up as in "Hooking dead- baits 1" in this link . You will have to scroll down and click on the items that interest you. www.hooklinks.co.uk/pike/navigation2/pikeframe.html?=singlehooks.html

Jamie, If you are hooking it like the snap tackle in the picture then I guess you were just unlucky, have another go and better luck next time. Cheers Woody
