Spent a couple of hours down the canal this morning. The fishing was pleasant for 30 mins until a gale force wind came from nowhere and made presention almost impossible. Managed one tench and a couple of roach until I gave up. Still caught more than the 'carp brigade' who were out in force again.

have you tried backshotting when its windy daz, pick quite a heavy rig and make sure the length of line between the pole and the float is about 2 foot long, get a big shot a BB or an AA and put it on the line about 1 foot above the float, try and support this large back shot so it is just touching the water, the tip can still move around a bit in the wind but the float stays much stiller, its a bit harder to hit the bites obviously but its a whole lot better than not backshotting

I resorted to shoving the top section under which did seem to work but made hitting bites hard, especially from roach which give a quick bite when fishing on corn. I think that's because I was using a size 16 with two grains of corn?
I'll follow your advice next time and stick one of my chop rigs on with a backshot.
It's the only problem with that stretch of canal - just too exposed if the winds blowing.
