I arrived at the Dee around 5:15 am, and it was a glorious morning. The mist was rising off the river and everywhere was silent apart from the odd sound of the lark in the distance. I settled on the furthest stretch of the river out of the way of the usual anglers. I hadnt yet fished this far down so it was a bit of a learning curve for me. As I soon found out the river is anywhere from 8 - 14ft deep in this area compared to the 4 ft deep stretch i'd left behind me. I decided to fish the nearside bank under an inviting looking tree. I started off with the maggot feeder but was plagued by eels so changed to a straight bomb with halibut pellet and pva bags full of crushed pellet. After an hour and half Id had a few twiches but nothing concrete so I set up a stick float rig which instantly brought me some nice roach but not the chub i was after. Back onto the feeder with meat on the hook for the final few hours brought me plenty of twitches and pulls but again nothing i could hit. So at the end of the session, no chub, a few dace, plenty of roach and a few eels. Disappointing from the fishing point of view, however, for me the real winner for me was the wildlife, much better than a muddy hole in the ground any day. Just as I was setting up my stick float I was greeted by some cows coming down to the river for a drink - fabulous. I'll definately be coming to this stretch again.

Lovely isnt it. Its at times like that dave that fishing becomes almost secondary to me. Its such an escape after being cooked up in an office all week.
