Went down to the Cotton farm stretch for my first time today about 2.30pm. Barbel were the target. Went about 20 mins upstream to the deep hole and baited up with a few loose pellets. My hookbait was a large hair rigged halibut pellet. After about 10 mins, I hooked something big but the hook pulled after about 3 secs. Can only assume it was a barbel? The bites were finicky and I assumed they were small chub. I sat it out in this swim till about 7pm with only a few missed bites to speak of. I then went farther down stream of the M6 bridge, just before the horseshoe. Again halibut pellet the bait. This was the swim...... I had nothing until 8.45, when the tip went round and this 3lb 1oz chub saved me from blanking......phew. Soon after, another of about 1.5lb came along. Missed a proper wrapround bite after that. Fished till about 9.50pm, and then went home as it was dark. Apparantly, I was told that a guy 50 yards down stream of me had caught a barbel pushing 10lb. Lucky git... Anyway, all in all a pleasant day, even if the barbel were'nt playing out.
